There is a strong movement toward the installation of self-checkout systems in the grocery sector, says PSC Inc., a manufacturer and marketer of bar code scanners, automatic data capture solutions, and self-checkout systems.

Of 200 survey respondents, 25% plan to install a system in the next year and another 43% plan to begin evaluating a system. Respondents acknowledged the top three benefits of self-checkout – improved customer service, reduced front-end labor costs, and easing of labor shortage problems.
