AAR reports another week of carload and intermodal gains for week ending April 16

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week that United States rail carload and intermodal volumes saw another week of annual declines for the week ending April 16.

Carloads fell 12.9 percent annually to 240,462, which was ahead of the week ending April 9 at 229,704 and the week ending April 2 at 238,138.

Five of the ten commodities tracked by the AAR were up annually, with miscellaneous carloads up 22.8 percent at 9,823, and grain up 14.3 percent to 20,784 carloads. Coal dropped 36.5 percent to 63,090 carloads, and petroleum and petroleum products fell 27.7 percent to 10,887.

Intermodal containers and trailers were off 7.4 percent at 259,317, which was ahead of the week ending April 9 at 249,355 and the week ending April 2 at 253,841. 

On a year-to-date basis through the first 15 weeks of 2016, total U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are down 7.3 percent annually at 7,461,761.
