AAR reports mixed volumes for week ending January 16

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) said that rail carload and intermodal volumes for the week ending January 16 were mixed.

Carloads for the week ending January 16 were off 16.6 percent annually at 242,670, which was ahead of the week ending January 9 at 239,221 and the weeks ending January 2 and December 26 at 207,743 and 206,903, respectively.

Three of the ten carload commodities tracked by the AAR saw annual gains, with miscellaneous carloads up 21.4 percent to 8,437 carloads and motor vehicles and parts up 2.8 percent to 16,751 carloads.

Intermodal containers and trailers were up 1.1 percent annually at 263,763, which was ahead of the 258,939 recorded the week of January 2, as well as the weeks ending January 2 and December 26, which came in at 187,920 and 184,204, respectively.

The AAR said that for the first two weeks of 2016 total cumulative rail carload and intermodal volume was down 6 percent at 1,004,593 carloads and intermodal units.
