AAR reports mixed volumes for week ending March 5

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) reported this week that rail carload and intermodal volumes were again mixed for the week ending March 5.

Carloads were down 8 percent compared to the same week last year at 247,016, which was below the week ending February 27 at 248,921 and ahead of the week ending February 20 at 244,747.

Six of the ten commodities tracked by the AAR were up annually, with miscellaneous carloads up 38.8 percent at 9,917, and motor vehicles and parts up 11.9 percent to 18,892 carloads.

Intermodal containers and trailers were up 4.5 percent annually at 265,186, which was below the week ending February 27 at 273,019 and ahead of the week ending February 20 at 252,463.

For the first nine weeks of 2016 total cumulative rail carload and intermodal volume was down 3.4 percent at 4,548,033 carloads and intermodal units.
