United States rail carload and intermodal volumes were again mixed for the week ending February 13, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
Carloads continued to slide, falling 15.4 percent, or 244,344 carloads, annually. This was ahead of the week ending February 6 at 241,680 and below the week ending January 30 at 248,961.
Only two of the ten commodities tracked by the AAR were up annually, with miscellaneous carloads up 27.4 percent to 9,406 carloads and motor vehicles and parts seeing a 12.6 percent increase to 18,711 carloads. Coal continued its ongoing decline, down 32.5 percent to 75,249 carloads, and petroleum and petroleum products dropped 23.4 percent to 11,303 carloads.
On the intermodal side, trailers and containers headed up 10.4 percent annually to 260,814. This trailed the week ending February 6 at 262,830 and topped the week ending January 30 at 253,134.
For the first six weeks of 2016 total cumulative rail carload and intermodal volume was down 5.8 percent at 3,017,321 carloads and intermodal units.
