Maximizing Throughput and Uptime with New Bar Code Initiatives for Warehouse Automation

Modern Materials Handling magazine conducted a survey on behalf of Accu-Sort Systems, a provider of bar-code laser scanner and camera solutions designed to optimize materials handling processes in manufacturing and distribution facilities.

This research was designed to gauge the relative importance placed on improving efficiency in warehouse operations, the impact of bar-code scanner downtime occurrences on materials handling operations, and the preferred approach to service and the level of satisfaction with that approach.

The Survey revealed a number of important trends:

  • One-third of the respondents have actively implemented programs designed to increase the efficiency of their warehouse operations.
  • An occurrence of bar code scanners downtime has an average cost of $90,000 through incurred labor hours, reduced throughput, and lower customer satisfaction.
  • Satisfaction with suppliers’ service performance doesn’t measure up on those aspects of service considered most important.
