Rail carload and intermodal volumes are down for week ending December 12, reports AAR

Rail carload and intermodal volumes were down for the week ending December 12, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

Carloads were down 13.2 percent annually at 270,953, which was below the week ending December 5 at 271,774 and ahead of the week ending November 28, which was impacted by Thanksgiving, at 230,919.

Two of the ten carload commodity groups tracked by the AAR were up annually, with miscellaneous carloads up 39.5 percent to 10,764 and motor vehicles and parts up 1.8 percent to 19,502.

Intermodal containers and trailers were down 2.3 percent annually at 274,022, which was ahead of the week ending December 5 at 270,276, and the week ending November 28 at 219,470.

Through the first 49 weeks of 2015, carloads are down 5.4 percent at 13,589,488 and intermodal is up 1.7 percent at 13,075,037.
