Wearable smart glasses from Pcdata deliver hands-free picking

In a press conference on Tuesday, Marc Braun, president of Pcdata USA (Booth 4564), unveiled the new paperless, mobile order picking technology, Smart Glass with Distrib Augmented Reality (AR).

In a press conference on Tuesday, Marc Braun, president of Pcdata USA (Booth 4564), unveiled the new paperless, mobile order picking technology, Smart Glass with Distrib Augmented Reality (AR).

A finalist for MHI’s Innovation Award, the device “is based on the VUZIX M100 industrial smart glass technology platform,” explained Braun. “In line with our development philosophy, Distrib AR is easy to set-up, with absolute minimal hardware installation requirements, making implementations within a day feasible.”

Constructed of safety glasses equipped with a small camera, the device reads a 2D bar code posted each pick or put location. SKU selection or placement instructions are projected onto the lens of the smart glasses.

An operator wearing the device can attain similar pick speed and accuracy to pick-/put-to-light systems—but without the need for hardware infrastructure, he said.

“This makes Distrib AR ideal for smaller operations or warehouses needing greater flexibility,” Braun added, “such as temporary locations or facilities with significant fluctuations in demand.”
