Wanted: Company Relief
July 11, 2008

You might ask how a dumb guy like me, who gets into all kindsa trouble on the job, keeps his job. How ‘bout comedy relief?

There ain't many jobs available for a “comedy relief,” and I guess there’s some level of skill required to be such an artful screw-up. I wouldn’t recommend you copy me, though. Like I said, I think me and maybe Dagwood Bumstead and the “Born Loser” hold the only jobs left that call for comedy relief.

There’s more of a future in being a healthy, capable person. And believe me, you live longer going in that direction than doin' what I do. You wouldn’t believe what gettin' squished in a palletizer can do to your posture.

I just read an article by a guy named Frank Pennachio. He’s co-founder and Director of Learning at the Institute of WorkComp Professionals in Asheville, NC. He says the lack of healthy prospects is causing employers to pass up opportunities to expand their businesses ‘cause they can’t find workers who can handle their job requirements.

Get this: in the U.S., someone turns 60 every 10 seconds. I keep lookin’ at my own watch every ten seconds now. My productivity is even worse now—and believe me, it was pretty bad already. And young people are looking more and more like me—paunchy and dumb. Pennachio says up to 75% of people 18 to 24 years old aren’t eligible for the military ‘cause of obesity, illiteracy or substance abuse. This is the first generation to be less healthy than their parents!

It’s now up to employers to be in shape to develop and maintain a healthy, trained, productive workforce. Doing stuff like training and establishing health programs for employees may make companies “an employer of choice.”

Your company doin’ anything like that? Blog back about it.
