Housing starts were up 2.6 percent in April at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 717,000 compared to March’s revised estimate. This represents a 29.9 percent year-over-year gain from April 2011. A nearly 30 percent increase. What exactly does that tell us—that a year ago at this time housing starts were still basically terrible or that things are really getting better. I suspect that it is a combination of both.

Following a $150 million infusion in August geared towards an effort to grow the United States natural gas vehicle sector, Clean Energy Fuels Corp., the largest provider of natural gas fuel for transportation in North America, recently announced company investors, including Clean Fuels chairman and founder T. Boone Pickens, invested another $150 million into the company in late December.

USA Dry Van Logistics, a national provider of asset-based transportation and third-party logistics focusing on cross-border shipments between the U.S. and Mexico, recently announced it emerged from bankruptcy after filing for it in February. Company officials said that USA Dry Van was successfully able to restructure the business and have the same customer base, employees, lenders, and equipment intact.

Speaking at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals Annual Conference in San Diego last week, Chuck Taylor said that for the first time in its history the United States will be forced to increase economic growth while decreasing oil consumption, which, he said, is something that has never happened before.
