Dock Equipment: Speed means savings for large doorways

Industrial equipment manufacturer upgrades to high-speed doors from older models with 90-second cycles.

Massive parts and equipment are regularly moved between departments and buildings within Putzmeister’s 200,000-square-foot complex in Sturtevant, Wis. New high-speed doors prevent heat loss in the facility, earning the company additional incentives from the power company.

As part of the company’s manufacturing process, it is necessary for large loads to access large exterior doorways. They ran an audit to identify inefficiencies at the facility.

“The old doors would take a minute and a half to open,” says Alan Glodowski, facilities manager for Putzmeister America. “In the winter, it would take quite a while to recover the heat loss in the building.”

According to Jerry Welz, the certified energy manager and professional engineer who conducted the audit, “When it comes to high-speed doors, the difference in temperature from one side of the door to the other is where it counts. The higher the temperature difference, the greater the benefits.”

Putzmeister increased the efficiency of its entire operation by installing eight specialized doors. The doors improved productivity, increased access control, reduced labor costs and significantly reduced maintenance costs.

On top of an estimated annual energy savings of nearly 7%, the power company provided substantial financial incentives. Glodowski says the doors quickly paid for themselves, saying “the payback made the decision for us.”
