Mobile amp; Wireless: Psion joins Sprint Open Device Initiative

Psion, a leading global provider of rugged mobile solutions, today announced it has joined Sprint’s Open Device Initiative to provide its customers with access to the strength of Sprint’s 3G network in the U.S.

Psion, a leading global provider of rugged mobile solutions, today announced it has joined Sprint’s Open Device Initiative to provide its customers with access to the strength of Sprint’s 3G network in the U.S. This agreement helps to meet the need for rugged mobile devices and Psion is already shipping Sprint-certified versions of its EP10 rugged handheld to customers.

“Psion shares Sprint’s commitment to open development and collaboration, and our relationship enables both companies to reach new markets and expand our business in sectors where rugged mobile devices are required,” said Jeff Adelmann, Director of Business Marketing, Sprint.

Sprint’s Open Device Initiative is the product of more than a decade of experience certifying non-Sprint-branded devices on its networks. The Open Device Initiative accelerates the process of identifying, testing and deploying devices. The EP10 underwent lab evaluations to meet Sprint’s requirements for wireless communications, including 3G certifications for CDMA and EVDO network support.

The Psion EP10 is a durable PDA device, designed for commercial use in retail, transportation, professional services, field services and field sales. Built on Psion’s modular Omnii core architecture, it offers all the functionality of high-end, full-size devices in a smaller form factor and at an affordable price. Psion EP10 appeals to businesses that require a more durable handheld computer that can cope with challenging weather and environmental conditions.

“Sprint’s Open Device Initiative aligns with our company strategy of open innovation and with the help of Ingram Micro, we will expand the use of the EP10 into new markets that require the durability Psion is known for with the full feature set of a traditional smartphone,” said Mike Wills, Vice President, North America Sales at Psion. “Working with Sprint enables us to reach new customers and makes it easier for our existing customers and partners to take advantage of all that the Sprint network has to offer.”
