DHL rolls out new Charleston, SC-based facility

Global express delivery and logistics services provider DHL said this week it has opened up a new Charleston, S.C.-based service center facility, which it said its almost triple of its previous facility in the area and designed to handle the company’s projected growth through 2025.

DHL said this new $2.2 million, 16,200 square-foot facility, which is in a business park in close proximity to the Charleston International Airport, provides pickup and delivery services for international shipments.  Being located near the Charleston International Airport, said DHL, will reduce delivery times to and from the airport, which, it said, will benefit shippers, as shipments will arrive earlier.

“International shipping is growing and will continue to do so, fueled in large part by the explosion in international e-commerce among businesses of all sizes,” said Chet Paul, General Manager of the Southeast for DHL Express U.S., in a statement. “DHL is the leading-edge provider of international logistics services, with some of the most forward-thinking technology in the industry as well as proactive growth planning, which is what we’ve demonstrated in Charleston.”

A DHL spokesman told LM that the company needed a much larger facility to handle the volume increases, which have been fueled, in large part, by the explosion in international e-commerce.

And he added that the new facility’s 16,000 square-foot footprint dwarfs its previous one, which was 6,000 square-feet. The facility also now has 17 load positions compared to seven at the previous facility along with two dock height doors, whereas the previous one had none before.

This is not the first time in 2018 DHL has opened up a new facility, due to growing shipment demands that have been driven by e-commerce.

In April, DHL moved its Southern California-based service center in Ontario to a larger location in order to meet increase growth it is seeing in international trade and e-commerce.

DHL invested $7 million into this new facility, which is located at 1651 S. Carlos Ave., which is comprised of 75,000 square-feet of building space, and 5,600 square-feet of office space. This new location is significantly larger than is previous location in this area, which was 39,000 square-feet.
