Hurricane forces coastal data storage inland

Rack and mezzanine system at new warehouse installed on very tight schedule.

Advanced Data Storage owns more than 1.8 million miles of off-shore and on-shore seismic data that must be stored digitally and in print. After Hurricane Katrina, the company moved away from outsourced storage and began designs for its own inland warehouse. A two-level, 80,000-square-foot, rack-supported archive and record system was installed in six weeks, meeting deadlines and ensuring a safe home for valuable data.

On April 1, 2010, ADS broke ground on its new 57,000-square-foot warehouse in Brenham, Texas. After more than a year of permit delays and building construction, the company had a very tight deadline to complete the project. Including a 40,000-square-foot mezzanine, vertical reciprocating conveyor, and mezzanine safety gates, the project was broken into four phases of about 10 days per phase.

Due to the extreme installation schedule, producing the handrails, stair supports and equipment barriers partly in the field reduced lead times. To ensure the bar grating was installed according to the design, complete drawings of the pre-cut bar grating were created. This provided the crew with a map for installation.

The fully functional, multi-level document storage system, which was completed on schedule and opened on time, was a result of teams working together to fast-track the process.
