Rolls-Royce optimizes production with lifting technologies and maintenance services

The Rolls-Royce Vietnam plant is an integral part of the Rolls-Royce marine services network, which spans five continents and provides vessel design, systems integration, support for power and propulsion equipment and more.

The 540,000-square-foot manufacturing facility must meet top world standards of safety and engineering as specified by customers. To optimize uptime while handling complex structures, the company installed a series of girder and jib cranes.

“Good, reliable cranes are very important to our total production, efficiency and quality control processes,” says production engineer Ho Thanh Lam. “Our cranes are used many times in each continuous process of fabrication and maintenance projects. If there are no cranes, the workshop cannot process its task, so reliability is critical.”

The company now relies on its fleet of nine electric overhead girder cranes and 12 jib cranes (Konecranes) in nearly all phases of production and maintenance. Cranes are integral to the plant’s ability to totally fabricate diverse and complex structures, and are used in processes such as plate handling, plasma cutting, grinding, welding, assembly, fitting of drives, bearings and gears, finishing, testing and loading of output.

Its beam cranes, in capacities up to 70 tons, include multiple mountings to provide flexibility and safety when working around complex fabrications. In addition, features such as sway control and target positioning simplify crane operation.

High-performance brakes, durable wire ropes and remote operation further improve safety and reliability. Adaptive speed range means that loads move at an optimal rate, enhancing control over loads and improving productivity while saving energy.

“The cranes are good quality, reliable and safe,” Lam says. “And, they are also easy to operate.”

The crane supplier also provides maintenance services, working with in-house staff to conduct comprehensive crane inspections twice a year. Service staff members are on call 24/7.
