Dan Gardner, an shipping industry veteran who oversaw integration of sales, finance, and systems during Deutsch Post’s acquisition of Excel Global Logistics, recently shared his impressions on streamlining the process of SOLAS required VGM compliance.
“While it now appears that U.S. East Coast and Gulf ports are working more efficiently with carriers and terminals to comply with the new initiative, the West Coast is going to be just fine,” he said. “The fact that we have more on-dock rail in Los Angeles and Long Beach complicates the picture. But new efficiencies now in place will prevail.”
Gardner is the Director of Global Sales for Mobileweight - a company dedicated to streamlining the process of SOLAS required VGM compliance. Through the company’s patent-pending mobile application for Apple iOS and Android, participants at every stage of the intermodal supply chain can file VGM by entering weights or snapping a picture of the scale ticket.
Transmitting through INTTRA, Mobileweight promises to provide accuracy, and efficiency when shipping anywhere in the world. But Gardner agrees with the Global Shippers’ Forum that shippers should resist additional fees imposed by other members of the supply chain.
“As a former forwarder, I know that terminals and carriers will always try to add a surcharge or other service fee,” he said. “So vigilance if still a given in this new environment.”
