One of the world’s largest parcel delivery services is redesigning its fulfillment processes to meet new challenges, inside and outside the warehouse.
This month, the Modern editorial staff has put together our 8th-annual Technology & Innovation Issue.
Already in full force before Covid-19 came about, the push to automate warehouses and distribution centers is expected to pick up as more companies look for ways to manage social distancing rules, remote workforces and other new challenges.
Warehouse execution systems grew out of the need to manage the way orders are processed in highly automated DCs to get more efficiency out of high-end fixed automation—but now the focus is expanding. Here’s how suppliers are addressing the need to manage automated and manual workflows, and apply machine learning and predictive models.
Now valued at more than $15 billion, the supply chain management software sector posted impressive growth in 2019, with some interesting shifts taking place among the Top 10 players in the space.
At one point, it was all about dimensioning boxes for shipment. But e-commerce changed that as DCs needed to dimension what was going in the box. Doing that requires a new set of capabilities.
