American Plumbing & Heating’s new mezzanine improves workers’ safety

The mezzanine’s audible alarm, which features a flashing LED light, instantly alerts operators of open gates.

In a thriving economy, growth is as welcome as it is daunting. When it’s time to expand facilities, there are only a few options. American Plumbing & Heating was faced with this challenge and is no stranger to the high demand of commercial and residential plumbing fabrication.

Due to this demand, the Norwell, Mass.-based company’s warehouse had a diminished amount of room. However, after careful consideration, the company decided against building a new addition to its warehouse, mainly because of workflow disruption, as well as the amount of time it would take to build.

So, rather than developing a new addition, the company chose a mezzanine that was less disruptive and quicker to implement.

“We have 250 people working for us, and we fabricate in our warehouse approximately 90% of all the piping systems that go into all those buildings in the field,” says president and founder Joe Clancy. “We move a lot of product through our building, and the installation didn’t affect our production at all.”

Having considered three different mezzanine installation contractors, American Plumbing & Heating eventually chose a mezzanine that is 126 x 34 feet (4,284 square feet in all). It features two sliding access gates, which are paired with an EdgeAlert Open Gate Alarm, an audible alarm (with a flashing LED light) that instantly alerts operators of an open gate.

“The cost of installing access gates armed with EdgeAlert is low, especially when you consider your workers’ safety. Not to mention, it lowers workman’s compensation claims,” Clancy says. “I was [also] impressed by [the alarm developer’s] commitment to safety and their proactive approach to going above and beyond Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.”
