As a dairy industry leader, Logan, Utah-based Gossner Foods currently maintains a growing family business with three locations across the western United States. In preparation for future growth, Gossner Foods has elected to continue its usage of mobile racking systems, primarily to conserve space and energy in its cold storage facilities.
After all, Gossner Foods was an early adopter of mobile racking systems. “In the late 1990s, we first utilized [a mobile racking system] at our Logan plant,” says Dave Larsen, plant manager at Gossner Foods. “We immediately realized the benefits of a mobile racking system over conventional static racking systems—greater volume of cheese storage in the same space, elimination of specialized narrow aisle forklifts and energy conservation.”
He adds, “Over the past two decades, as we’ve systematically grown our operations, we’ve continued to install the system. It just makes good business sense.”
Today’s demands in the food industry—cold storage in particular—are driving an unprecedented rate of change, with a focus on warehouse automation. In Gossner’s storage system, a racking structure is installed on powered moving bases, replacing conventional static aisles. The system increases storage density and product access.
“By sharing the access aisle among multiple storage aisles with the powered racks, not only are we storing more cheese, but we also have a smaller area to heat, cool and maintain, which has had a net positive impact on our bottom line,” Larsen says.
