Span Alaska’s acquisition of PAF to create Alaska’s largest LTL freight forwarder

Latest Material Handling News

Seattle-area based Pacific Alaska Freightways (PAF), a provider of freight transportation services to Alaska, including steamship, barge, rail, air, truckload, less-than-truckload, and intermodal was recently acquired by Span Alaska Transportation, an Anchorage, Alaska-based provider of freight and transportation services for the Alaska market.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Span officials said that this new entity will be the largest less-than-truckload (LTL) freight forwarder serving Alaska, with both PAF and Span customers having access to expanded service offerings and more direct service offerings to more locations, too.

And they also added that with PAF in the fold Span Alaska will ship more than 400 pounds of freight annually to Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico, while employing more than 220 people. It also provides overnight service from Anchorage to Fairbanks and the Kenai Peninsula and offer less-than-container load service via barge from Seattle to southeast Alaska.

“With the combined teams offering more experience than any other company, our customers now have more options, faster and more direct service, all while continuing their relationship with the same people that have served them for years,” said Tom Souply, CEO of Span Alaska, in a statement. “We look forward to this next chapter in our company’s great history.”

A Span Alaska spokesperson said that the increased volume through this acquisition means more options, faster delivery times, as well as expanded geographies for customers of both companies. Span Alaska customers now have service to Kodiak, as well as a deep bench with experience in the construction industry, and PAF customers now have access to direct loading to Wasilla along with services to Puerto Rico, Guam and Hawaii.
