Established in Sweden in 1942, Thule is a manufacturer of car racking systems for a range of outdoor equipment including bikes, skis, canoes, kayaks and luggage. Employees at the facility are frequently required to unload shipments from flatbed trucks. After the installation of a temporary structure at the U.S. headquarters in Seymour, Conn., the unloading task became much easier during inclement weather.
“We were using an unprotected loading dock, and we were concerned with the safety and comfort of our employees,” says Dan Orth, facility manager and manufacturing engineer manager at Thule. The ideal solution, he says, is a structure that protects the workers and materials during unloading.
“We love how it lets in natural light during the day, offering good visibility and safety for employees,” Orth says. “Plus, the building requires virtually no maintenance.”
Orth adds that the speed of assembly of the structure was a big advantage. Orth says the 20-foot by 42.5-foot building has presented no problems with leakage during rain, snow or sleet. He says it also offers the additional benefit of serving as a garage for other vehicles when employees aren’t unloading dock.
