U.S. dispatches aid for Philippine typhoon recovery on Veteran’s Day

The U.S. military lost little time in responding to Typhoon Haiyan with humanitarian relief. But not all the associated challenges are related to logistics.

Typhoon Haiyan was a maximum category-five storm with gusts of up to 235 mph, and authorities say in the city of Tacloban, Leyte, alone, 10,000 could be dead.

Meanwhile, a team of about 90 U.S. Marines and sailors have been dispatched to the nation, and more humanitarian relief is on the way.

But reports from Manilla suggest that social unrest and criminal activity may further complicate the U.S. mission.
