Sealed Air announced that its PakNatural loose fill solution, an innovative protective packaging product made from non-food, renewable materials, has been certified as biodegradable and compostable by three independent international organizations.

In addition to its sustainable properties, PakNatural™ loose fill provides superior protection, produces less dust, has greater inherent strength over starch-based loose fill packaging and provides superior anti-static performance over expanded polystyrene products.  Many operations already designed for loose fill packaging can easily switch to PakNatural loose fill without making changes to their current packaging process.

“At Sealed Air, we believe that maximizing sustainability means finding efficient packaging solutions that address the entire product life cycle to meet the needs of our customers,” said Mark Bourke, PakNatural Sales Development Manager for Sealed Air. “Previously, we didn’t offer loose fill packaging because the environmental and performance positioning did not fit with our company’s vision. With PakNatural loose fill, we have developed a loose fill solution that offers sustainability and performance benefits at competitive price, giving our customers another option to meet their protective packaging needs.”

A number of international certification organizations have certified PakNatural Loose Fill as a biodegradable and compostable material. The product received Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certification under the organization’s American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) ASTM D6400 test for compostability. German certification organization DIN CERTCO, has certified PakNatural loose fill as “compostable material” licensed to incorporate the organization’s “compostable” logo in product labeling. Also, Belgium-based independent testing and research organization Vincotte has certified the product to incorporate its “OK Compost” logo in labeling, signifying compliance with the organization’s standards for compostability.

“PakNatural loose fill is another example of our SmartLife commitment to sustainability through efficient packaging solutions that provide product protection while reducing costs and environmental impact through the entire supply chain,” said Ron Cotterman, vice president of sustainability at Sealed Air. “We also are committed to helping our customers make informed decisions about sustainability and our products by combining third party certification, life cycle modeling tools and performance verification.”
