Geodis is an international transportation and logistics service provider that operates an asset recovery center in Nieder-Olm, Germany. After replacing standard T5 lighting with an intelligent LED lighting and software platform, the company saw a return on investment in four and a half years.
The facility processes repair and recycling of customer equipment, which requires attention to detail and good lighting. “We were searching for a reliable, intelligently controlled LED lighting technology that would offer our employees optimal visual conditions for a safe and productive environment while lowering the costs of lighting and its maintenance,” says Sven Kircher, manager of central purchasing in Northern Europe.
The new lighting system Digital Lumens includes networks of intelligent LED fixtures with integrated controls combined with a software system that maximizes energy savings. Kircher says that it also improved productivity and the safety of employees, as well as providing insight into facility operations. For example, the lighting intensity varies between 80% and 20% based on movement patterns in the site.
Automatic configuration delivers optimal light based on time of day and harvests existing daylight. By dimming the facility when employees are not present, the lifespan of the lights is extended approximately four-fold, from 66,000 hours to more than 260,000 hours, or 30 to 40 years along with savings of up to 90% of lighting-related energy costs. The new system has decreased power consumption and reduced the cost of lighting by $81,000 in the first year.
