Electric lift trucks keep deliverables on the right track

Casebook 2012: Electric lift trucks help rail company streamline shipping of temperature-sensitive goods.

Shipping massive quantities of temperature-sensitive perishables across the country in a safe, timely and environmentally friendly manner is no small feat. Using four, 55-car refrigerated trains, Railex ships the equivalent of 220 truckloads of refrigerated product from coast to coast each week. Between its Washington state and New York facilities, Railex uses a fleet of 154 clean-running lift trucks whose speed, reliability and extra features help the company unload an entire train in 24 hours—all while maintaining the cold chain supply chain.

Committed to environmental stewardship, Railex selected the lift trucks because they run clean and are in line with the company’s own sustainable initiatives. Railex mangers note that every single train saves 80 million gallons of diesel and can transport 100 times more goods than 225 cross-country trucks.

Bill Collins, manager of Railex, says the lift trucks have also proven very durable and feature an assortment of features that improve safety and value.

“These forklifts were a natural fit for the Railex team,” says Collins, speaking highly of the lift truck provider. “Together, we are able to work effectively toward creating the new future for perishable freight, delivering shipments on time and on temperature, each raising standards for excellence in our industry.”
