The old adage is that robots are ideal for the dull, dirty, and dangerous tasks that people shouldn't have to do. But robotics developers must still keep human workers in mind as they design and build autonomous systems, and end users still need to conduct safety assessments.

Fortunately, robot manufacturers are adopting voluntary safety standards such as ISO 10218 to ensure peace of mind and avoid liability. That international standard covers a range of systems, including personal care robots, industrial automation, automated guided vehicles or AGVs, and collaborative robots.

The standards themselves are evolving to keep up with the latest technologies. In addition, advances in robotic perception and software are increasing the safety and utility of these machines.

Download this Special Focus Issue to learn more about the following:

  • How robots can augment human workforces and reduce risk
  • Current and emerging safety standards
  • Applications where safety is a particular concern
  • New technologies to improve safe collaboration between humans and machines
