Casebook 2011: Symetrics Industries stays on target with new ERP system

End-to-end information system expands transparency, increases accuracy and fuels growth.

To manage its global aerospace and defense contracts, Symetrics Industries set out to find a flexible information system that would allow rapid response to daily changes. After deploying a new enterprise resource planning (ERP) manufacturing system (Epicor, 800-999-1809, http://www.epicor.com), the company has improved cycle time while maintaining a near-100% record of on-time deliveries.

Symetrics’ countermeasure systems recognize incoming rocket threats, such as shoulder-fired Stinger missiles, and direct them safely away. Similarly, as a member of the aerospace and defense manufacturing industry, Symetrics must identify and respond to a new set of challenges every day. In addition to strict product quality and safety guidelines, processes must be easily adaptable to accommodate new designs, materials and manufacturing technologies.

In November 2008, Symetrics replaced its existing system with a software provider’s newest platform, which combines Web 2.0 concepts with an adaptable and collaborative business architecture.

The new, automated ERP system provided an end-to-end solution with support for manufacturing processes from proposal to delivery and beyond, including invoicing, collection, human resources and payroll. Even as the system has allowed company revenues to grow 67% since 2005, it has also reduced labor costs.

Most importantly, since the upgrade, Symetrics has streamlined operations, improved cycle time and reduced errors while improving its on-time delivery record with best-in-class responsiveness, flexibility and dependability. Peter Volkert, director of operations for Symetrics, says the company also has improved its operational visibility and forecasting ability.

“Every user on the system, from shop floor to top floor, now has the ability to see exactly where the product is in each stage of production,” says Volkert. “Better information and more consistent information means fewer mistakes and less wasted time, money and material.”
