Fixed path: AGVs ferry tons of product and data

The same automatic guided vehicle fleet handles product in the plant and the neighboring warehouse.

The machines at Delmenhorster Kork-Fabrik Arthur Linck GmbH (DKF) produce up to 5,000 crown corks per minute in three daily shifts. Having evaluated automation for organized, reliable material flow systems, the company has selected automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) in support of structured production processes.

Each machine currently produces between 3,000 and 5,000 crown corks per minute. The AGV system conveys empty and full cages, bins and cartons to their process points. Each cage or bin takes between 330,000 and 370,000 corks, meaning each AGV can collect up to a ton of materials from the filling system. From there, they are taken to a newly installed central station where items are checked, hygienically sealed and labeled. The AGVs then take the containers to the adjacent warehouse.

The AGVs use dual laser-inertial navigation, receiving input from all points where their scanners can see reflectors. In the warehouse, where reflector paths can be obstructed, the AGVs are controlled by magnets in the floor. When they are not in use, the vehicles independently travel to the automatic battery charge point.

DKF has boosted production volume, improved process transparency and ensured on-time deliveries.

“Our main aim in terms of automation was an organized, reliable, transparent material flow system. This solution meets those requirements and more,” says Edgar Linck, DKF managing partner. “Our customers are as enthusiastic about this modernization project as we are, because it also means we are playing a big part in helping to comply with food safety standards.”
