National Manufacturing Day celebrates industry

Third annual event includes an appearance from President Obama, 1,500 events nationwide and its own movie.

Across the country today, customers, suppliers, educators and students will take a moment to reflect on the value of manufacturing to the United States economy. Through a series of educational outreach programs, facility tours, and business partnerships, both leaders and newcomers will have an chance to learn about career opportunities, training and resources in domestic manufacturing. These events and others will work to improve the public perception of manufacturing careers with an eye toward reducing the skilled labor shortage, which is just one item among a list of challenges and possibilities facing the industry.

We have compiled a list of resources from the Modern Materials Handling archives, which include up-to-date reports on the state of manufacturing from a variety of perspectives. Readers will also find links to the Manufacturing Day home page, as well as research and commentary from industry associations such as ISM and MAPI. We hope Manufacturing Day leaves our readers wiser than they were yesterday, and prepared to tackle the challenges ahead.
