New dock hardware protects people, product and profit

With a combination of perimeter seals, dock levelers and vehicle restraints, Lundberg Family Farms' facility maintains a safe, efficient and sanitary seal at its six new dock doors.

Lundberg Family Farms, a third-generation business in Richvale, Calif., recently built a 37,558-square-foot warehouse, but recent product growth led to Lundberg doubling its warehouse floor space, not to mention its dock traffic. With a combination of perimeter seals, dock levelers and vehicle restraints, the facility maintains a safe, efficient and sanitary seal at its six new dock doors.

Lundberg searched for equipment that would provide durability and energy-saving features such as LED indicator lights and weather seal systems. In addition to the energy saving benefits, the dock equipment installed at Lundberg has helped keep productivity high.

“We have been using these air-powered levelers for the past 10 years with almost no maintenance except for cleaning out the pit and some occasional lubrication on the hinges,” says Bob Van Camp, Lundberg’s warehouse manager. “We’ve never had to replace one despite heavy use.”

Lundberg maintenance staff can more easily clean and access all parts of the pit and leveler system. Other features include push-button operation and a lower profile design. The lifting bag, gaskets and fittings are resistant to chemical wash-down exposure and rodent damage. A patented system for stump-out and free-fall protection includes structural dock support legs, which can carry up to 60,000 pounds worth of vehicles and cargo.

In many facilities, rodents and outside air can enter where the pit is cut into the dock floor, forming a passageway between the dock wall and the leveler. At Lundberg, the perimeter guard’s unique design continues to provide an effective seal up to 9 inches above the dock floor. The seal fabric is not exposed to the face of the loading dock wall, preventing tearing and damage by truck trailers or other debris.
