SICK’s camera system targets next-level improvements

SICK (Booth 1031) put its ICR880 camera system on display at ProMat 2011, a solution that in combination with SICK’s software, provides analysis of bar code reading failures and other problems to get at the next level of process improvement.

The ICR880 system covers high-end applications for linear and 2D code reading as well as featuring a lens that is optimized for capturing information from smaller boxes or items like books or CDs, said John Ashodian, market manager for retail logistics, at a booth visit Wednesday. The system uses SICK’s visualization software to quickly analyze the causes of bad reads such as damaged bar codes or side-by-side box orientation. The similar 890 model is optimized for reading larger items.

“The type of analysis you have with this system and the software can help you get to the next level of accuracy and process improvement,” Ashodian told Modern.

Also on display at the SICK booth was a low-cost, Web-cam option for SICK’s laser readers that offers users some visual capture and analysis capability. The Web cam can’t reach the same level of detail or analysis as the 880 or 890 camera systems, but does provide some video capture and analysis using SICK’s software.

ProMat 2011 will be held March 21 - 24, 2011 at McCormick Place South in Chicago. The tradeshow will showcase the latest manufacturing, distribution and supply chain solutions in the material handling and logistics industry.
