SSI Schaefer starts producing face masks for DCs, waste collectors and clients

Company plans to produce as many as 1,000 masks per week in North Carolina and Mexico locations.

Schaefer Systems International, Inc., a leader in reusable packaging systems, automation and material handling systems has begun to produce face masks for essential employees amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Packaging Systems Division within SSI Schaefer is using its textile dunnage sewing capabilities and leveraging vendor relationships to quickly manufacturer masks for clients, retail distribution center employees, and waste collection workers within North America. Production started last week in both Charlotte, N.C. and the San Louis Potosi, Mexico locations.

“This is a great opportunity to help our communities and essential employees who provide much needed services every day,” said Andy Schumacher, vice president of packaging systems division for Schaefer Systems International, Inc. “We applaud each and every one of them for their heroic efforts to keep the economy and the essential services going. This is a project the entire SSI Schaefer team got behind and made happen quickly along with our suppliers. We’re all happy to contribute and do our civic duty.”

The first prototypes were completed last week, but plans to produce as many as 1,000 masks per week are in the works.
