Information Management: Voice helps two facilities speak the same language

Relocated repack operation replaces paper with voice-directed picking to improve accuracy and productivity.

Sears Holdings Corp. (SHC), which operates Sears and Kmart stores, ceased operations at its Columbus, Ohio, distribution center in late 2014. The DC had processed the largest volume of pick-to-tote/repack merchandise for the Midwest and East Coast, but that volume was to be moved into two other DCs. New voice systems helped establish a systemic solution and ensure a smooth transition.

Neither of the facilities in Manteno, Ill., and Wilkes-Barre, Pa., had an existing pick-to-tote/repack operation. They instead had traditionally used pick-to-light technology and/or pick-from-paper processes. Now, both locations now use voice-directed picking solutions.

Associates were trained in about two hours and were at 100% productivity within three days. Associates now average 300 picks per hour, with some reaching up to 500. Channel accuracy for pick-to-tote in non-voice centers stands at 99.69%. Distribution centers equipped with voice have seen a 99.85% level of accuracy after just three months.

Managers report that associates are volunteering to work with voice because it is more enjoyable. After a successful deployment in two of the four DCs, SHC plans to implement the solution in the remaining facilities by the end of 2015. The company is also considering voice systems for other facilities and processes.
